Overview

Sacred Heart Academy “SHA” Bryn Mawr (PA) is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls founded in 1865 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and lay-owned and governed since 1969. Serving approximately 200 students in kindergarten through twelfth-grade, the School is seeking a dedicated and effective Reading Specialist in anticipation of the 2024-25 school year. This is a part-time position.

The Reading Specialist will lead the development and support of the literacy program for students in grades K-12 including the administration of assessments and their use in instructional planning, delivery of small group/individualized instruction, sharing of best practices, and enhancing learning opportunities for students and staff. Enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and impeccable organizational skills are key.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and analyze reading skills assessments
  • Develop specialized learning plans for students on as needed basis
  • Provide one-on-one and small group instruction as needed
  • Offer guidance to faculty to help develop or strengthen reading instruction curricula and differentiated student skill groups for small group instruction
  • Teach academic skills class to Middle School students

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Reading Instruction (or related field) required, Master’s degree in Reading Instruction preferred
    • Three or more years of experience as a reading specialist, reading teacher and/or elementary school teacher preferred
    • Certification in Wilson or Orton-Gillingham preferred
    • Experience administering and analyzing reading skills assessments
    • Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, time management, and writing skills
    • Demonstrated ability to connect with and make a positive impact on young people
    • The ability to communicate and work effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and staff
    • Willingness to engage with and learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
    • Commitment to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community; experience in and demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion work that supports a diverse community preferred
    • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional growth and development
    • Appreciation of and commitment to single gender education
    • Eagerness to contribute positively to the SHA community and uphold its Mission including a commitment to the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria
  • Ability to bring joy, kindness, maturity, and flexibility to the school environment
