Hey, has anyone done a cooking temp comparison with the kettles along the lines of how much a difference it makes having all three bottom air vents open vs. two, one, all half open, top vent half open, etc.? My kettle is a pre-thermostat model and haven't gotten around to adding one...

My Fathers' Day Gift

I bought my first Weber Kettle about five years ago. It went missing in 2008. I was very very sad.

This past weekend, my three month old daughter bought me a new 22.5" OTS for Fathers' Day. She is the best!

It's pretty much impossible to find Weber grills here, but I did snag an old one for the UDs build. Used it a few times before maiking it the UDS parts. Now that I have bought a new one, I weep for the old one. The disc vents fit much tighter, the steel was heavier, and it carried the MADE IN USA label. Sigh ... the search goes on for the oldies here, though they never seem to come up in CL or classifieds.

I've had my OTS for about a year now. I was a die hard gasser before it, just wanted some variety. It's now my main grill, and only means of smoking. Now and then, when I don't have a whole lot of time, I'll fire up the gasser, but I feel like I'm cheating on my fiancee.....it just feels wrong. The kettle is probably one of the greatest grill innovations.

Got my first kettle a couple of months ago. what can you say - easy to use, versatile, reasonably priced. Immediately set about modifying it. set a thermometer in the lid and a set of hinges. So far so good. Needs a side table for sure.

My parents gave me their 15 year old kettle 22.5" when I moved into my first house in college. I left it behind for the guys moving in after me to enjoy. My wife, then girlfriend, bought me a new one as a housewarming gift when she moved in with me. I've now got three. Once you've mastered slow and low on a kettle, everything else is easy.

I recently purchased a 22.5 Weber One Touch. Once I started using it I noticed the lid moved around alot and smoke was coming out from around the lid because it didn't fit right. If I hadn't owned a Weber previously I probably wouldn't think anything about it but my other Webers lid snaps on almost. I contacted Weber and got a replacement no problem, I out it on and it was the samething, I contacted them again and the next person I got, even after sending photos, said that was the way they were supposed to operate and suggested I move any coals out from around the intake vents at the bottom....

I still think Weber is #1, but this purchase definitely has left me upset. Good thing I'm making a USD.

I just recently purchased a new 22.5 Weber Once touch and had a similar experience, I think? When assembling it, I noticed the lid didn't exactly fit properly...it was loose in some areas. But when I put the coals in and lit it up the bottom bowl expanded from the heat and then the lid wouldn't go on without me having to press down kinda hard on the lid to snap it in place. I'm totally new to grilling so I'm not sure if this is normal, acceptable or not? anyone? It stayed on after that and wasn't hard to pull off or put back on . I guess I'll look more closely next time I grill to see if there's any smoke coming out from the sides. . . . edit I just went out and checked the lid. It fits good now. I guess it just needed to be heated up once for a fit.

I'm on my second Weber kettle. I just gave my first one, a 22 ots, to my daughter, after I found a practically new otg on craigslist for $50 last week. I was cooking for a bunch of folks the other day, and my wife thought that the nine slabs of spares (4 of them St. louis) I had on the wsm might not be enough for supper.

Well, the new kettle got broken in and pulled off a dozen smoked thighs with bite through skin in record time. The previous owner had dropped the lid, but a little patience in measuring and bending had it all back in round and no side drafts, so the chicken cooked very evenly between two piles of K, with one chunk of smokewood on each.

The best thing about the otG is that the hardware holding the ash sweeper together is stainless, unlike the otS. The worst thing about either is when the legs get loose, like with my old ots.

I just picked a 22.5 inch Weber kettle off kijiji for $30. It was missing the charcoal grate but I managed to get a replacement fairly cheap.

So far I love it. I have never had a charcoal grill before but I don't know if I could ever cook burgers on anything else ever again.

I have picked up a thermo like that (actually 2 parts, the thermo was $16 and the housing was $9 ) at a local hardware store that has a HUGE Weber display. Try there first. I can buy and send you a set if you can't find one locally or find anything online.
